The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby written by F-Scott Fitzgerald is a classic read for anyone in middle school and above. The book takes place in the 1920's in New York city. It is a love story about a very rich man trying to win back the woman he loves. It is the perfect fairy tale story with a twisted ending.

This exciting novel was also made into a film. In my opinion the film was much better than the book and that is usually not the case when it comes to these things. The book sends a great message about wealth and power. Main character Jay Gatsby throws tremendous parties every weekend, but even with all that money he is still not happy.

Gatsby risks everything to gain the love of Daisy back but in the end he does not get what he wants. A common theme throughout the novel was being cautious of wanting too much. Another common theme was the American Dream. Gatsby was fighting for what everyone else in America is constantly fighting for, the American Dream.

Pros- First person narration. The book is well written and Fitzgerald connects well with the audience through the use of Nick.

Cons- There are scenes of racism that probably made sense back in the 1920's. The language is also a little outdated and gives the readers the sense that it is staged.

Overall this is a great read. The cons of this book do not stop it from being a must read for middle-schoolers. This is something that will keep you guessing, what will the Great Gatsby do next?

  1. The novel is really great. I really like the style of writing that Fitzgerals used in Great Gatsby.

  2. I remember having to read this book in high school for English class. I liked the story, I was intrigued by the 1920's language and descriptions. There is also a lot of symbolism that help shape the characters throughout the story. I have only watched the original movie, not the newer one yet, which I thought did okay in depicting the characters and scenes from the book.
