Last Night I Sang to the Monster by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Imagine waking up in a rehabilitation center with no recollection of how you got there. That is what happened to eighteen-year-old Zach. Zach is an intelligent and well-spoken teenager. By first impressions you wouldn’t be able to tell that he is the son of an abusive and depressed mother and alcoholic father. Zach is haunted by monsters from memories and nightmares that appear in his dreams. To figure out how he got there Zach will have to fight his demons and confront his past.

How did he get there? What challenges must he face to get out? Will he ever get out?

This story is good for teen readers because it discusses mental illness and addiction and the process it takes to recover and/or overcome it. This book can serve as a lesson to young readers showing them that addiction will not only dismantle their lives. It will also dismantle everything and everyone around them. Through this well written story Benjamin Alire Sáenz provides readers with an inspiring message about mental illness and alcohol dependence.

  1. I really love that Y.A. books have become a genre that openly and honestly talks about alcohol and drug abuse, as well as mental illness. This was a great blog post. I might check this book out for myself! :D
