The Borden Murders: Lizzie Borden &
The Trial of the Century
By: Sarah Miller
Lizzie Borden
took an axe,
Gave her mother
forty whacks
When she saw
what she had done,
She gave her
father forty-one
We have all
heard the rhyme and sang it for ourselves. But little did we know the gruesome
facts behind the words we sang running around the playground.
Just before noon
on August 4th 1892, a scream was heard coming form the Borden house
in Fall River Massachusetts. Her sister comes running, and as neighbors and
authorities fill the Borden home one person raises to the top of the suspect
list; Lizzie. She is arrested and tried
for the double murder of her parents. In a very controversial trial, Lizzie was
acquitted of the charges. The case to this day still remains unsolved. Lizzie
Borden may have taken an axe to her parents, but we will never know. All we
know is that it was a media sensation of the time.
Reading this
book you get to a chance to see how being a woman in the late 1800’s you could
get away with everything. You also get to read about a wealthy family whose
parents met an untimely end, but no one knows why. This book takes a look at
how crime was handled in the late 1800’s. It was surprising to see how a
community treats its fellow members after such a crime is committed.
PROS: The story
of the Borden murders is one that is interesting and packed with so much
controversy. It is a fairly easy read, and it is a good read from start to
finish.
CONS: This is a
very gruesome story, that deals with the murder of a young girl’s parents. It
is filled with a lot of legal terminology and many confusing facts.
