Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan
Tired of all that stories for babies? Do you really (really) want a story that can lift you from the boredom that school and the routine causes?... Congratulations! You have come to the right blog! Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan is a comic about four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls (mad girls) who made the most awesome day after Halloween ever.
In my opinion, this book was a step ahead of my expectations in terms of quality, it’s awesome! Let’s begin with the story. Erin is a 12-year-old girl who had a mysterious dream the night of Halloween. The next morning, she went to work delivering newspaper and she was intercepted by three scaring teenagers. She is rescued by three 12-year-old girls who seem to be more experienced dealing with bad boys, then, Erin joins those girls. After that, everyone goes to an inhabited house where they discover an alien spaceship. They receive an electric shock by that spaceship and they decide to get out of the place. After that, they feel that their sight sense has been altered and they find three unknown men. One of them hits to one of the girls. The other girls hit him back and because of that, they discover that the man is actually an alien, after that he escapes. After that, the girls notice that they’re seeing strange beings and things happening around. They go for refuge to one of the girl’s house and there, Erin gets a gunshot. Because of that, the girls have to carry her as an emergency to the hospital. After a psychedelic succession of events, the girls meet face to face with an Erin of the future.
The art in the comic is amazing, the gestures of characters are well made, the events are dramatically well represented and when necessary, the spatial dimension of the places where the plot is happening give you the clues that you need to follow the story. The text itself is not difficult, it's interesting, and is well balanced between the picturesque uses of language that the girls use.
Readers will enjoy very much this story. It is full of fantastic drama as well as realistic one, with special encourage on the feeling of "this really happened". This book includes realities of middle school and dysfunctional families as well as strange friendships that actually work.
Pros:
• The book results very interesting by the awesome art on it
Cons:
• Despite the high quality of the graphic material, teenagers might find the plot boring by its fantastic side.
