Dirty Little Secrets By: C.J. Omololu
Lucy knows that family is important and she would do
anything for her family. Especially her mother who has a huge secret. Her
mother’s secret weighs down on Lucy. The secret is so big that it is
taking a toll on her socially and emotionally. When Lucy attempted to tell a
close friend about it. Her friends and peers harassed her to the point where
Lucy felt that it was necessary to change schools. As an attempt to have a normal life Lucy chooses to keep
an even bigger secret from everyone. This secret would allow her to have normal
life no matter how devastating, disgusting and heartbreaking it is.
Dirty Little Secrets takes place in 24 hours. These 24
hours drag the reader through many emotions. This book is extremely engaging
and while reading it you can feel all of Lucy's emotions as if you're right
there with her. This story is an example of what happens when children
are not properly cared for. It also shows us that many students fall between
the cracks and are not asked the right questions to make sure that they're safe
home environment.
This book is great for young readers because it shows that them that it is okay to ask for help if you need it and that harboring secrets that hurt you or your family members is unhealthy. I think that there are many young adult readers who will relate to this book. Those readers who don't will find this book very hard to put down because it is very suspenseful.
