Steve Jobs: The Man Who Thought Different. A Biography by Karen Blumenthal
(YALSA)
“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” - Steve Jobs - US computer engineer & industrialist (1955 - 2011)
Ever notice that bitten out apple on the back of a lot of our computers, phones, iPods, and iPads? There is a bigger story behind that bitten piece of fruit that a lot of us may not realize. The man behind these profound and universal electronics is the late Steve Jobs. In this biography, by Karen Blumenthal, she takes us inside the story of APPLE from beginning to end and introduces us to the man who made the world different with his ideas.
Steve Jobs was born February 24, 1955 in San Francisco and adopted shortly after birth. At a young age is was an innovator and loved art, history etc. Jobs attended Reed college in the early 1970’s. This is where he met his wife Laurene Powell. College and curriculum were not for him. He dropped out and decided to travel India and study Buddhism. He was enlightened by the power of thinking and feeling to create things or change the world. Jobs admit a lot of his endeavors of thinking were drug induced. When he got back from his travels in 1976, Job and his partner Wozniak, or Woz, started the apple corruption in his parents garage. They ended up creating the apple II, what was a great success. It was one of the first personal computers ever that was mass-produced. Him and his partner sold over 100 million dollars from this computers. On Dec. 12th 1980 the product went public and 1.2 billion dollars in sales the next day. Steve Jobs later was pushed out of his own company in 1985 over disputes. After the Apple company decided to merge with the NeXT company Jobs then came back and became CEO his old company. In 1997, “Think Different,” a campaign launched by Jobs, developed, in time, products such as the iPod, iPhone, iMac, iTunes, App Stores, Apple Stores, etc. The campaign changed the way we listen to music, the way in which we use phones, and the way we use technology in general. It was a complete game changer. In 2003, Jobs was diagnosed with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor and died in October 5th, 2011 of lung failure related to the tumor. At Steve's funeral, everyone to a bite of an apple as they lowered his casket. Steve left behind his wife, son and daughter, but he forever changed the world we live in.
Why is this a good YAL book? This is a good YAL because of how it is written. The book is about 250 pages but written in bigger font. The novel also includes many pictures. Young adults enjoy visuals, so I thought that was something to point out. Also, young adults these days are in the prime age of the iphone, social media, and computers. This is a great book because it takes a glance where important things in their generation stems from. Jobs can be a great role model for teens. This story shows them they if ever they feel like a failure there is a light at the end of the tunnel and their thoughts and innovations matter.
